VANNI CALANCA – LEICA PHOTOGRAFER

Vanni Calanca was born in Mirandola in 1945 under the star sign Gemini. He studied art, painting and advertising graphics at the “Sepo” school in Bologna. At the beginning of the ‘60s he devoted himself to self-taught photography (in the highest sense of the word) walking the tightrope of self-discipline with an enthusiasm beyond compare. In 1994 he founded the famous Leica Photographic Group of which he has always been the president. In 1997 he published a book giving it a title made up of two names: his own and that of his camera – Vanni Calanca and His Leica is by now a classic binomial that has almost become one word. The point is that this legendary German camera with its  brilliance and clarity seems to be made specially for this photographer; if you look closely at his images, you will see that they are full of suggestions even in the most extreme light conditions to the point of expressing himself with the most extreme chiaroscuro yet never losing an ounce of delicacy. This constitutes the most brilliant element of his photographs, sort of blurred and detailed all in one, a play of light and counter-light, almost photographic music.
In the past twenty years he has built himself a solid reputation internationally: since 1989 his works have been on display at uncountable shows in Italy and abroad. He collaborates with prestigious Italian and foreign magazines, publishing firms and art galleries. He has obtained significant awards (in 1999 he was awarded the prestigious MFI, Master of Italian Photography, by FIAF [Italian Federation of Photographic Associations]). He has worked with Agfa Gevaert on professional products and is the testimonial for Leica Camera AG of Solms that uses his photographs in PR activities for technical and commercial editions.
